Cascades has grown steadily since 2005 into a proper small resort: a 60,000-square-foot gaming floor, an attached 178-room hotel, a convention centre and a set of restaurants and bars, all on one site in central Langley about an hour east of Vancouver.

It is not a destination and does not pretend to be. The customer base is the Fraser Valley — regular local visitors, wedding parties, conference delegates and travellers breaking the drive along Highway 1 — and the property is priced and staffed accordingly. Rooms routinely sit at half the downtown Vancouver rate.

Where it earns its place on this list is completeness. Everything a casino hotel needs is here at a modest scale and in reasonable condition, and it is the only property between Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan that offers the full package. For a road trip east it is a sensible overnight.

Around 1,000 slot machines fill most of the floor, with a mix that is current but not extensive and a small progressive selection. The room is busy on weeknights in a way that the big destination properties are not, which gives it a pleasant, unhurried local atmosphere.

Roughly 40 table games cover blackjack, roulette, baccarat and a modest carnival rotation, with limits at the lower end of the Metro Vancouver range. There is no poker room. The small high-limit area is adequate for the property's scale and no more.

The sports lounge is a decent room with a good screen wall, and it is the busiest part of the building on a fixture night. Professional dealers here are used to regulars rather than tourists, which makes the pit relaxed and quick to explain a game if asked.

The attached 178-room Coast hotel is straightforward, well-kept three-and-a-half-star accommodation: comfortable beds, decent bathrooms, no design ambition and reliable soundproofing from the gaming floor. Rooms overlook either the parking areas or the Langley townscape, neither of which is a view.

There is a pool, a fitness room and a substantial convention floor that keeps the hotel busy midweek. Parking is free and abundant. For the money — consistently among the lowest rates of any casino hotel in this guide — the value is strong.

A buffet, a pub-style restaurant, a coffee outlet and bars. It is functional, moderately priced and adequate for a one-night stay. Langley's own restaurant supply is a short drive away and includes better options, so there is no reason to eat every meal in the building.

A lounge with regular live music and a summer patio programme, plus the convention centre hosting occasional larger events. There is no dedicated theatre. Entertainment here means a band in the bar on a Friday, which suits the property and its audience.
