About Hotel Trails

We review casino hotels. We do not run one, own one, or take money from one. That distinction is the whole basis of this publication, and it is worth stating before anything else.

Who we are

A small travel desk with an unusually specific beat

Hotel Trails Travel Media Inc. was incorporated in Vancouver in 2022 to cover a category that Canadian travel writing had largely ignored. Casino hotels are among the largest hospitality properties in the country — Fallsview, Caesars Windsor and River Rock each carry several hundred rooms — and almost everything written about them came from the operators themselves.

Four years on, we have published 74 articles and reviewed 20 properties across 10 provinces, and around 31,800 people read the site each month. The team is small: two editors, a handful of regular contributors and a fact-checker who reads every review before it publishes.

We are based in Vancouver, which is deliberate. It puts three of the country's better casino hotels within an hour and forces us out of the Ontario-centric view that dominates most Canadian coverage of this category.

What we do

Reviews of casino hotels, as travel destinations

Everything on this site falls into one of three categories. Property reviews — a full assessment of a casino hotel across five weighted criteria. Reference guides — the games found on Canadian floors, the provincial rules, planning material for a first visit. Segment pieces — luxury properties, resorts, high-limit salons, and where each of those words is being used honestly.

We treat a casino hotel the way a travel publication treats any other resort: what is the room like, is the food any good, what is there to do, what does it cost, and would we go back. The gaming floor is the largest room in the building and gets described in the same detail as everything else.

What we are not

Not an operator, not an affiliate, not a gambling service

Hotel Trails does not operate, own or manage any casino, hotel or gambling facility. We do not accept wagers, process payments, or offer gaming of any kind. We do not run affiliate links to gambling platforms, publish bonus offers or promotional codes, or provide strategy intended to influence the outcome of a game.

We are not a booking service. There is no reservation function on this site and no commission arrangement with any property. When a review says a room is worth the money, nothing about that sentence earns us anything.

Method

How we review a casino hotel

Five criteria, fixed weights, applied identically to every property regardless of size. The weights have not changed since we started publishing.

Casino floor 30%

Size, breadth and condition of the gaming floor: slot machine count and denomination range, the number and spread of table games, whether a poker room, sportsbook lounge or bingo hall is operating, and the quality of the high-limit and VIP areas. We also weigh how the space feels to spend three hours in — sightlines, noise, air, seating.

Hotel 25%

Room quality against what the property charges, not against an abstract standard. Bed and bathroom condition, soundproofing between the rooms and the floor below, the mix of categories available, and the state of the shared amenities — pool, gym, spa, parking, check-in flow.

Dining 15%

Number and range of outlets, whether the signature restaurant would survive outside the building, buffet quality where one exists, and how badly the property is affected on a busy weekend. Room service and late-night options count.

Entertainment 15%

Venue size and, more importantly, the calendar. A 5,000-seat arena with sixty nights a year of touring acts scores far higher than a larger room that sits dark. Free lounge programming, seasonal events and proximity to a wider entertainment district all contribute.

Value and access 15%

What the trip actually costs relative to the alternatives, seasonal rate swings, parking and resort charges, and how hard the property is to reach — airport distance, transit links, and whether a car is required.

The process

  1. We book and pay for the room ourselves, at public rates, without notifying the property.
  2. We spend at least one full evening and one daytime session on the gaming floor, counting tables, checking limits, noting the machine mix and the condition of the room.
  3. We eat in at least two of the property's outlets, at our own expense.
  4. We check the practical layer: parking charges, check-in routing, soundproofing, transit access, and whether the published facilities actually exist.
  5. Scores are set against the five criteria, weighted, and reviewed by a second editor before publication.
  6. Properties are re-audited on a rolling basis. The date of the most recent audit (July 2026) appears on every review.

Where a property has changed materially since our last visit — a new tower, a refurbished floor, a poker room closing — we re-review rather than adjust the number.

Editorial independence

Our policy, in full

These are the commitments the publication runs on. They are short because they need to be checkable rather than impressive.

  • No paid coverage. No property has ever paid to appear on this site, to appear higher in a ranking, or to change a score. There is no rate card and no arrangement under which one could exist.
  • No hosted stays. We book and pay for our own rooms and meals at public rates. We do not accept complimentary accommodation, dining credit, event tickets or gaming credit from any property we review.
  • No affiliate revenue from gambling. We carry no affiliate links to gambling platforms and no promotional content of any kind for gaming operators.
  • Corrections are published. Factual errors are corrected on the page and noted. If a property disputes something we have written, they can write to the editorial desk and we will check it.
  • Advertising, if any, is labelled. Where the site carries advertising it is identified as such and has no bearing on editorial content or scores.

The practical test of independence in this category is simple: does the publication ever say a property is not worth the money? Our reviews of Casino Niagara, Elements Surrey and Deerfoot Inn answer that.
