Luxury casino hotels in Canada

Almost every casino hotel in the country describes itself as luxury. These are the 7 where the word survives contact with the room, the restaurant and the service — judged on the hotel, not the gaming floor.

What we are measuring here

This page ignores the size of the casino floor entirely. A property qualifies on the strength of its hotel component: room quality and condition, soundproofing, bathroom standard, the spa, the dining, and whether the service would be considered good in a hotel with no gaming attached.

That is a deliberately unforgiving test in this category. Several of Canada's biggest gaming floors sit under hotels that are merely adequate, and they are not on this list.

The short answer

If you want the best hotel room attached to a Canadian casino, it is at Parq Vancouver. If you want the most beautiful building, it is Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu above the Saint Lawrence. If you want the best-run property overall, River Rock in Richmond.

All three are reviewed in full, with the qualifications each one carries.

The honest caveat

Where luxury is doing less work than the brochure suggests

Three qualifications are worth stating plainly, because they apply across the category.

A luxury room above a gaming floor is still above a gaming floor. Soundproofing is the difference between a good and a poor night at every property in this segment, and it varies more than room photography suggests. Where it is an issue, our reviews say so.

Destination pricing is not the same as luxury. Fallsview in July costs more than Parq Vancouver and delivers a less good room. Rate is a function of the falls, not the fittings.

Two of the best hotel experiences in this category are not owned by the casino. The Hilton at Lac-Leamy and the Fairmont at Charlevoix are hotels in their own right that happen to adjoin a Loto-Québec casino — which is precisely why they are as good as they are.
