Overview

What Grey Eagle Resort & Casino actually is

Grey Eagle sits on Tsuut'ina Nation land just beyond Calgary's southwest city limit, with the foothills starting a few kilometres further on. The property opened in 2007, added a hotel in 2015, and has spent the intervening years building an events centre calendar that outperforms every other casino venue in the province.

The gaming floor is mid-sized and pleasant: around 1,100 slot machines, 35 tables, a bingo hall that still runs scheduled sessions, and a high-limit room. It is comfortable rather than impressive, and it is not why most visitors come.

What sells the property is the combination of a good concert room, a decent modern hotel and Calgary's proximity — twenty minutes to downtown, forty-five to the edge of the mountains. As a base for a Rockies trip with an evening of entertainment attached, it works better than its size suggests.

The casino floor

Slot machines, table games and the high roller rooms

Around 1,100 slot machines run a current cabinet mix with progressive banks and a broad denomination spread. The floor is well lit and comfortably spaced, and it fills predictably around events rather than staying uniformly busy.

Roughly 35 table games cover blackjack, roulette, baccarat and carnival card games under Alberta's charitable gaming model. Limits sit in the mid range and the pit is unhurried. A poker room operates on a limited schedule rather than continuously — check ahead if it is the reason for your visit.

Bingo still runs scheduled sessions here, which is increasingly rare at a property of this class. The high-limit room is comfortable with raised limits and dedicated service, though it does not approach the private salon experience found at River Rock or Parq.

Rooms, amenities and how the property lives

The 187-room hotel opened in 2015 and remains the newest casino hotel accommodation in Alberta. Rooms are contemporary, quiet and larger than the Calgary average, with good bathrooms and reliable soundproofing. Some upper-floor rooms look southwest toward the foothills, which is the view worth requesting.

There is a fitness centre and meeting space but no full spa and no pool, which is the notable gap against River Cree. Parking is free and extensive. The hotel is physically separate enough from the gaming floor that a non-gaming guest would barely notice it.

Dining

Restaurants and bars

A steakhouse, a buffet, a casual restaurant and bars including one attached to the events centre. Alberta beef is treated with appropriate seriousness at the steakhouse, which is the outlet worth booking. The rest is dependable and reasonably priced. Calgary's own dining scene is twenty minutes away and better, so plan one dinner in and one out.

Entertainment

Shows, venues and what happens after dinner

The events centre holds around 2,600 and is the best-programmed casino venue in Alberta by a distance: country and rock touring acts, comedians, boxing and mixed martial arts cards, and a heavy Stampede-season schedule in July. Ticket prices are moderate and the room is well configured for both seated and standing shows.

Two days here

How we would spend the stay

  • Day one, afternoon

Twenty minutes southwest from downtown Calgary. Check in and drive out to the foothills viewpoints while it is light.

  • Day one, evening

Steakhouse dinner, then the events centre. Choose your dates from the concert calendar, not the other way round.

  • Day two, daytime

Kananaskis or Banff, both an easy drive west; the property is a practical base for the mountains.

  • Day two, evening

A quiet floor session — midweek here is genuinely calm — or bingo if the session times suit.

Assessment

Pros and cons

What works

  • The strongest concert calendar of any Alberta casino venue, in a well-configured 2,600-seat room
  • The newest casino hotel rooms in the province, quiet and generously sized
  • A practical base for the Rockies — Kananaskis and Banff are an easy drive
  • Free parking and scheduled bingo, which most comparable properties have dropped

What does not

  • No spa and no pool at the hotel
  • Poker runs on a limited schedule rather than continuously
  • Gaming floor is mid-sized and unremarkable next to the entertainment offering
Verdict

Our conclusion

Calgary's best casino hotel, and one to book from the concert listings backwards. The rooms are the newest in Alberta, the mountains are forty-five minutes away, and the gaming floor is a comfortable supporting act rather than the reason to come.
